Nightstand Build

House

This was the first real piece of “furniture” I’ve built, not counting small tables/plant stands, that would be used daily in our master bedroom as a nightstand with room to store a few things.

I felt this design was simple enough to jump right in with any Fusion 360 models. Taking measurements from an existing nightstand on the other side of the bed I created the basic box to make those dimensions out of some radiata pine plywood.

After that I start sectioning in 3 drawers with some supports and the face frame:

At this point, because of the way I inserted the drawer “separators” I realized that they were taking up way too much room. They would have make the drawers ~4″ deep and would have wasted approximately 3.5″ of usable space. Luckily before the wood glue completely cured I was able to take the single screw out of each side and tap it with a hammer to break free. Leaving me back to this stage:

I took a break from thinking about the drawers and broke out the biscuit jointer for the first time. Cutting holes for the biscuits to insert in both side of what will become the nightstand top. Cheated a bit here by buying the table top from Lowe’s, I just needed to make it wider.

Getting back to the drawers I recomputed the spacing and started to cut all the drawer box pieces:

Next was measuring and installing all the drawer slides:

To finish off the drawer boxes I used leftover plywood and did my first edge banding around all 4 sides of the 3 drawers:

Then it was time to stain and polyurethane everything. The drawer faces and nightstand were stained black. Draw boxes themselves were left natural just protected with multiple coats of polyurethane. The top was also painted black.

Last was adding the drawer faces to the drawers and the handles:

Final shots!
