Book Shelves

House

Needed some more storage options in the nursery and decided to go with this very simple on the fly design using some birch plywood I had from the dresser project.

Construction was very straightforward, cutting the panels and shelves to size on the table saw. For the first time on this (and the dresser project) I used the online cut list optimizer webpage and was very happy with it. After inputting the stock material and a list of panel dimensions the tool determines the best layout to minimize waste or minimize cuts. Here’s a sample of the output:

Once the two sides were cut I laid out the shelf locations and predrilled holes for screws.

Having the lines and predrilled screw holes made assembly very easy, just lined up the shelves at each point and screwed them together.

Since everything was made from plywood I needed to cover the exposed edges with trim and decided to make my own for the first time using some popular I had. Each strip was cut to 1/4″ width and the lengths needed for all exposed edges on the front, followed by glue and tape for clamping.

A couple rounds of sanding everything smooth, followed by paint for the main shelves:

Completing it with a 1/4″ panel of whiteboard, also painted white before pin nailing to the back:
