I wanted to try to make something from this piece of maple I’ve had in the basement for a couple years. I originally used it to cut some coasters/table center pieces out of and had the leftover trunk.
To start I jointed two sides down to create perpendicular surfaces.
Forgot to take pictures but I resawed it on the table saw to get 4 pieces, roughly 3/4″ thick. I glued them all together into a single board and let it sit overnight. During this process I realized that I didn’t get as much wood as I expected out of it because it was 3/4″ thick. I decided to pivot and create a key holder.
I jointed the board next followed by a few light passes through the planer. Here’s the progression across those steps and finally in to the table saw to get trimmed.
Continuing on without a plan, I thought it would look nice with some color and decided to use some other wood I had laying around. Using the table saw I put three slots in the maple.
Gluing them together gave me this:
I glued the wenge strips around the perimeter and started to mark out holes for the key hooks to predrill. Once predrilled I finished the board with Bush Oil.
